Battle for the Lead

The 917L (Long Tail) of Kurt Ahrens Jr and Vic Elford is leading the 917K (Short Tail) of Joe Siffert and Brian Redman, battling for the lead early in the 1970 24 Hours of Le Mans. The 917L had a speed advantage on the long Mulsanne straight while the 917K had a better handling in the twisty parts of the track. The 917L is shown here sliding more than the 917K.Neither car finished.
