Model Cars Masthead

1/24th Ford GT40 MK I

This is the original MPC kit of the original Ford GT40, as it appeared at the test session of the 1964 Le Mans 24 Hour race. Although relatively well detailed, the model had some major flaws. The doors, front and back hoods did not fit properly and the windshield had a wrong shape, along with the adjacent roof line and front hood opening. I originally built the kit in the mid 1960s, and since this is the only kit of the original GT40 ever produced, I found it worth it to keep it and I restored it entirely in the late 1980s. Unfortunately, the clear coating has turned slightly yellow.

To make the car conformed to its appearance at he 1964 race proper, "scoops" were added to the front hood openings and the nose radiator opening was modified, further cut back into the front hood.

Wiring and plumbing were added to the engine compartment, along with the fuel pumps. The suspension springs were modified, the exhaust system entirely re-done.

The front spoiler was added under the nose of the car, while the rear remained virtually stock.

The only details that were added to the interior are the seat belts and their buckles.
